HOW IT STARTED
The 1st National Convention of Singapore Muslim Professionals was held in 1990, in response to the worrying figures in the national statistics as charted by the Muslim community then. The community was over-represented in several social ills but was also sorely lagging in many critical areas of development especially those in education and employment.
The convention was considered a ground-up initiative for its time as it was initiated by a group of young Muslim professionals. They mobilised about 500 of their fellow peers to convene and brainstorm for the well-being and future of the Singapore Muslim community.
The convention resulted in the formation of the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) in 1991.
CONVENTION AS A MOVEMENT OF MUSLIM PROFESSIONALS
The successful mobilisation of members from the Muslim professionals community during the 1st convention was considered as epochal. It signified the emergence of a generation of Singaporean Muslims that was ready to step up and serve the community.
